Ecotoxicity of zebrafish larvae exposure to EE2/A6 mixture: Special emphasis on the posterior lateral line, PLL
Abstract
Posterior lateral line or PLL is a mechanosensory system present in fish and amphibians, which allows the detection of water movements in the environment. Stimulation of this system leads to an adapted behavioral response, such as swimming against the direction of the current, sexual display, detection of prey and predators. It has disappeared in terrestrial organisms and in particular in most tetrapods, where it has been replaced by another structure, the inner ear. The aim of our present study is to evaluate the effects of endocrine disruptor mixtures on zebrafish PLL regeneration. Exposure of 24-h-old larvae for 6 days to ethinylestradiol compounds EE2 and biopesticide A6 caused delayed nerve and hair cell regeneration. These results could lead to severe long-term effects on neuronal plasticity and repair and suggest that auditory hair cell loss is irreparable in mammals, especially in humans.
