Abstract

This study deals with characterizing ruminants’ production in the plateau region of Togo. It concerned 190 production units in eight prefectures of the region. Each targeted farmer was questioned in order to describe the characteristics of the production system. Results showed that production systems are essentially semi-transhumant where natural pasture is the main feeding source with rarity of feed complements. The region has important water resources and an important forage potential that does not benefit the livestock due to non-availability and non-accessibility. Zootechnics, genetics and sanitary aspects are not respected. Herders do not find the interest to regroup themselves in organizations. Through several structures, the government ensures a permanent technical support to herders.
