Abstract

A study on the impact of the depreciation of the Congolese franc against the US dollar on food security has been carried out in the commune of LUBUNGA, Kisangani town in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).  This analysis focused on the availability and accessibility of food by households. To do this, a field survey and document reviews were used to collect data. The results obtained showed that the general trend in the prices of basic foodstuffs used to calculate the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for Kisangani households for 2012-2018 is increasing. A positive correlation of around 84.8% between the exchange rate and the prices of basic food commodities (rice and maize flour) was observed. Households devote a significant proportion of their income to food, i.e. a food budget coefficient of 79%. The Food Consumption Score (FCS) of 27.6 showed that food is of inadequate quality and that households are food insecure.
